Movements and
Moments, a non-fiction graphic novel, is a collection of 10 stories. Each story
covers true facts, and important unrecorded historic moments.
Apart from the stories we read in our history books,
there are several incidents we don’t know about, which are equally important to
be remembered. Indigenous communities were the first to understand the
importance of preserving and respecting mother nature.
They were the first to
identify the manipulation and exploitation of natural resources by the
corporates. Vast industrialization like hydroelectric projects affect nature
and the people living around the area. The original landowners who have stayed
in a certain place for generations are forced to move out, leave their land,
homes and agricultural land and move to other towns and cities. This is an
emotional and physical turmoil. It was the indigenous women who fought for the
rivers, mountains. They were first to create trade unions for domestic workers,
where they demanded good pay and respect for all irrespective of the nature of
their jobs. The stories talk about success and at times failure, but there was
never a give up. With each failure they learned to be stronger for the next
fight.
This graphic novel is published by Zubaan. Zubaan is an independent publisher known for encouraging authors from minority communities
to bring out their stories.
Movements and Moments as the title implies has stories
from the global south, from Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, India, Vietnam, Thailand,
Bolivia, Chile, Philippines, Nepal. This graphic novel brought together several
artists and storytellers to bring out a colorful memory for the reader.

And people were clueless as to what was happening and for how long the lockdown situation was going to last. It was then that Sanid and Nithin came up with the question “Do you have a story to tell?” Few people were living by themselves, not able to meet their friends, drawn deeper into their loneliness. There were situations where several underprivileged people were in need of food, other basic necessities. It was difficult for a person or organization to go out and help the needy. At home, the otherwise peaceful environment turned hostile, with family members throwing their frustration around and hurting the spouse, their children. As opposed to in some homes, families came together, spent...
Lady Tarzan! Jamuna takes a Stand. The picture book, Lady Tarzan is written by the storyteller, Lavanya Karthik. Illustrated by Rajiv Eipe, who has worked on several children’s books. This English storybook is appropriate for ages 2+. Jamuna as a child, was taught by her father that our mother nature is what keeps us all alive and well. The trees should be considered as our brothers and sisters. We as humans should at all costs save the trees from destruction. In this incredible true-life story, Jamuna considers trees as her brothers and sisters. Not everyone accepted Jamuna for her respect and love for trees. At times her own villagers, scared of the wood smugglers, refused to support Jamuna for a good cause. As you know, a good forest is a beautiful ecosystem by itself.
